Camden County Boys & Girls Club Scores New Flooring for Clubhouse Game Room

Union Carpenters Team Up to Serve Local CommunityOffering a safe, fun and educational place for over 3,000 children in the Camden County area, the Boys & Girls Club provides a second home for thousands of local kids each year. Over 150 students attend the Parkside Clubhouse everyday after school, and the 5,000 square foot game room is the central place of activity for these busy 6-18 year-olds. When the New Jersey Carpenter Contractor Trust (NJCCT) learned that the Clubhouse flooring desperately needed replacement, we reached out to the Floor Covering Institute of New Jersey (FCINJ) and their Install-certified Union Carpenters who stepped-up to the plate in a weekend of community action.

"It's great to stand here and see the completed project," said Frank Koch, member of Floorcoverers Local 251 and Council Representative for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC). "It's a great feeling to work hard on a Saturday and go home knowing how we've helped these kids," he said as he stood on the freshly-laid VCT tile flooring with nods from his fellow Brothers and Install-Certified Floorcoverers.

But the service event would not have been possible without the support and contributions from contractors of the Floor Covering Institute of New Jersey. Consolidated Carpet of Carlstadt, NJ and Heritage Flooring, LLC of West Berlin, NJ contributed the materials and equipment which made this service event possible.

Consolidated Carpet, a third-generation, family-owned and operated flooring company supplied all of the materials, including over 5,000 square feet of VCT tile, cove base and adhesives necessary for the installation. Overall, the company donated materials valued at well-over $6,000 to the replace the Parkside Clubhouse game room.

"At Consolidated Carpet, we understand that being a good corporate citizen means community involvement. We believe in giving back," said David T. Meberg, President and CEO.

The coordinated efforts of Consolidated Carpet's staff made their partnership an even greater asset to the service event. The team in Consolidated's downtown Manhattan office accommodated all material requests and seamlessly arranged any necessary preparations with their crew in the Carlstadt warehouse.

Heritage Flooring, LLC contributed a hard-to-find floor-removal machine, cutting labor in half for the Club's Big Brothers who undertook the task.

Executive Director Milford Liss, a 30-year veteran of the Club, was amazed by the efficiency and dedication of the crew and contributing partners.

"Individuals giving up their time to improve the lives of children in Camden is something very special and rewarding. To see contractors donating thousands of dollars of materials and carpenters giving up their weekends to enhance the quality of services available to these children is greatly appreciated by both our young people and our staff and Board at the Boys and Girls Club," said Liss. "We would like to thank NJCCT, the Floor Covering Institute, and the Carpenters Union for their service."

When Union Carpenters and Contractors join forces to better a community, their partnership has many positive ripple effects. Embracing this culture of service is "…just what we do," said Koch, an 18-year member of the Carpenters Union.

"By representing both Union Carpenters and Contractors throughout New Jersey, NJCCT has unique access to industry partners who make it part of their mission to improve the communities in which they live. The Boys & Girls Club is extremely valuable to kids in neighborhoods all across our state," said Kate Hubschmitt, Program Coordinator for NJCCT. "When our craftworkers and contractors work together, their donated time and resources extends benefits far beyond these Clubhouse walls by improving the safety and quality of the environment often regarded as a second home for many neighborhood kids. It's a rewarding experience for everyone," she said.
