Blackstone Medical began as a top-flight machine shop in the mid-1960s, developing prototypes for the aerospace and defense industries. It was here, on a renovated dairy farm in Brimfield, MA, that Blackstone took shape. The Blackstone philosophy is based on a simple idea that the way to serve customers is by closely listening to their needs, applying that knowledge to craft innovative solutions, while maintaining the highest level of quality at every step of manufacturing.

By the 1970s, the company, then called Brimfield Precision, had already built a solid reputation for innovation and quality in both its products and manufacturing processes. In the mid-1970s, William Lyons, the company's founder, was asked by US Surgical to develop the world's first surgical stapler. The speed and precision with which the customers' need was met was typical for Brimfield Precision, but unique among medical device manufacturers - leading William to realize where the future of his company must be focused. By 1980, Brimfield Precision had become the world's primary supplier of surgical staplers.
